Graduate programs usually run on an apprenticeship model. If the program is research-based, you're likely admitted based on an identified research interest – and a good fit with a faculty mentor. Faculty members have research interests in which they've developed expertise after several years of dedicated study. It makes sense to pair up with a faculty member with a related area of interest as your own. Not only can you benefit from their knowledge, but they also guide you to develop your own area of expertise. How's that for getting on the road to becoming an academic superstar?

When I was applying to graduate school, I had identified an area of interest: how TV and music videos shaped ideas about relationships and sexual behavior of teenagers and young adults. This was an exciting area of study – not only because there was a clear niche to explore, but because I could literally watch and analyze TV shows and music videos as part of my career. And I got a chance to do just that!

My advisor's research interests read something like this: “Adolescents' conceptions of gender and sexuality, sexual decision-making, and how media affects attitudes and expectations about dating and sexual relationships.” Let's see… Does my potential advisor have an interest in media? Yes, TV and music videos fall under this umbrella. Relationships and sexual behavior? Double check. This would be a perfect mentor for me.

Faculty-student fit will be a key determining factor for whether or not you're admitted to a particular graduate program. Graduate school is challenging enough without struggling to find guidance and mentorship. It will make your life much, much easier to identify one (or several) faculty mentors before you begin a grad program. And if there is none at a university you would like to attend, I would seriously caution you to reconsider applying in the first place.
